Brief history of the 1989 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am

The 1989 Turbo Trans Am marked the end of the Turbo Buick era. GM’s last installation of the turbocharged and intercooler 3.8 liter V6. The same engine that powered the legendary 1987 Buick Grand National GNX. Finally installed in a platform that made sense. A car that came complete with all of the braking and handling upgrades available.

And selected as the pace car at Indy. I know what you are thinking. But in 1989 the only modification made to the Turbo Trans Am to pace the actual race was the addition of lights. This one didn’t need any other modifications. It’s fast, handles, and stops.

There were 1,555 of these built. The majority of the build run had leather and T-tops.

I’ve owned this Trans Am since 2001.

Currently 49,000 Miles. The car was purchased from a private owner in Phoenix in the Spring of 2001 with 36,000 miles. Always garaged and covered. The car has been in the dry phoenix area for over 30 years.

This in an early car, number 297 with glass T-tops that fit correctly. Later cars had Lexan tops.

No accidents.

Everything works.

Mobil 1 and AC or WIX filters only. Mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid. Well cared for inside and out.

Headliner, top shades, and visors restored with original fabric (very hard to find).

Intercooler was removed and throughly cleaned a few years ago.

Fiberglass reproduction rear wing (I have the original).

Subframe Connectors from BMR Fabrication (SFC008) Installed 10/2023. Stiffens chassis.

Brakes redone with stainless steel brake lines.

Knock and boost gauges mounted on A-pillar.

The Air Conditioning compressor was replaced with an AC-Delco replacement. The R12 A/C blows cold.
