Cartoons by Allan Flowers
From the archives of Ron Will
Allan Flowers was a good artist and designer even before he entered the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology (I.I.T) in Chicago. In high school he entered the Fisher Body Craftsman’s Guild, and after 3 tries, he won the 4th place top National Senior Award in 1962 for his model car design.
Allan’s focus was now on a career in car design. During his studies at I.I.T., he was assigned a transportation project to study the various ways that people used to transport themselves. Allan used his exceptional creative drawing talent to show dozens of whimsical ways that people move themselves. Some of these ideas from 1964 even foresaw the use of solar power and personal electric scooters and cars. These 60 year old sketches still hold up today.
After graduation from I.I.T. with a degree in Product Design, he was immediately hired by GM Styling at the Tech Center in Warren, Michigan. His designs contributed to Pontiac, Buick and Chevrolet production GM cars. After 16 years with GM, Allan joined the development team that started Nissan Design International in La Jolla, California, where he continued his productive design career.—Ron Will
